Nominal Dimensions

When most people think of something like a 2×4, they think its measurements would be 2 inches by 4 inches, right? Well, not quite… they do start out that way but by the time they get cleaned up for sale they’re smaller. A 2×4 is actually 1-1/2 by 3-1/2. It takes some getting used to. Here are some common “nominal” dimensions and their actual sizes.
